On Sunday, Titouan Carod (BMC MTB) won the cross-country event at the Mountain Bike World Cup in Val di Sole, Italy. Nino Schurter (Scott-SRAM) finished second, earning him his ninth overall series title.
From the gun, Carod led the race, with Schurter close behind him, followed by Luca Braidot (Santa Cruz FSA MTB), Jordan Sarrou (Specialized), and Alan Hatherly (Cannondale Factory Racing).
By the third lap, Carod had separated himself from the other two riders and was leading the pack on his own. Slowly but surely, Schurter caught up to the two pursuers, and the three of them worked together to try to close the gap on Carod.
On lap 5, Schurter passed Hatherly, then on the penultimate lap, he passed Sarrou to finish 35 seconds behind Carod in second. Sarrou held on to finish in third place.
Despite finishing in second place, Schurter showed no symptoms of sadness since he had already won the series for an unprecedented eighth time.
In an interview with Red Bull TV after the race, Schurter commented, “The entire season, with winning World Champs and now also winning the overall, is like a dream” (opens in new tab). I haven’t been where I wanted to be for the previous two years, so to return with these two triumphs is fantastic.
With his victory, Carod moved up from fifth to second in the final World Cup rankings, while Luca Braidot’s (Santa Cruz FSA) sixth was good enough for third. As a result of his sixth-place performance, David Valero (BH Templo Cafes UCC) fell from second to fourth place overall.
