OKBET CYCLING : In his attempt to break the Hour Record, Dan Bigham used a prototype Pinarello bike

On Friday, Dan Bigham attempted to break the UCI Hour Record while riding a prototype of the Pinarello Bolide time trial bike, which was built by adapting the newly launched road version to accommodate a fixed gear for the track. The rear drop outs were swapped down, but that wasn’t all that was done to improve the bike’s aerodynamics; the non-driveside chainstay was also made very thin, and ridges were added to the seatpost and saddle tube.

The British rider tried again, this time at the Tissot Velodrome in Grenchen, Switzerland, using a very different set of equipment than his last try. Because of his elevated status inside the Ineos organization, he was just gifted a shiny new bike, some shiny new Princeton Carbonworks wheels, and a BioRacer Katana speed suit.

While Bigham does own a time trial componentry firm called Wattshop, he chose to ride a cockpit made by Most, a component subsidiary of Pinarello, rather than one from his own brand. There is a price range of €17,000 to €20,000 for this 3D-printed, custom-moulded item.

Since it was developed with the Bolide, when mounted on Pinarello’s TT bike it will undoubtedly be more aerodynamic than anything Wattshop could come up with on its own.

Wattshop, on the other hand, got to see the cranks thanks to the Cratus Aero crank and 64T chainring that he had matched with a Cratus sprocket of 14T in the back. They were linked together by a special low-friction Izumi Kai chain made for the Tokyo Olympics, with additional lubrication provided by Muc-Ludicrous Off’s AF treatment.

A nod to his ‘Pig’ moniker, his Bioracer racing suit was white and pink. His Kask Mistral hat fit this style well. Notably absent were the peculiar air spoilers found on the Kask helmets used by the Ineos Grenadiers during the Tour de France.

The British rider used a pair of Nimbl Expect shoes, which are made to order for track cyclists, cost €2,299.00, weigh less than 200 grams, and have a perfectly smooth front face. Following that, he put on a pair of Bioracer Epic aero overshoes over the top. Finally, instead of the more popular Vittoria Pista track tubulars, a set of Continental GP5000 TT tyres have been included in the standard list.

To top it all off, Bigham ran 55.548 kilometers, which is 459 meters further than Victor Campanaerts’ previous record of 55.089 kilometers.

Bigham’s effort is seen as a stepping stone to more significant things from the Ineos group, however. In spite of postponing the original date, Italian multiple time trial world champion Filippo Ganna has already declared his intention to attempt to break the hour record.

Bigham has been collaborating closely with Ganna to achieve this objective, and he has no doubt been influencing Ganna’s endeavor with his own preparation.
